As a Choir We Can Be a Storm was part of the Evaporate Live Art Festival, a festival organised by Mobius (Boston, USA) and Performance Art Bergen (Norway), which took place at the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum (Boston) in November 2023.
In 2023, a total of 615 anti-trans bills were introduced across the United States. These bills seeked to block trans people from receiving basic healthcare, education, legal recognition, and the right to publicly exist. 87 of these bills have passed.
With this horrendous fact in mind, I created the performance As a Choir We Can Be a Storm, done over the course of the two days of the festival. On the first day, I invited the audience to create protest signs with me. The signs should refer to the record number of anti-trans bills in the country, and they should also have a connection with water as we were at the Waterworks Museum. On the second day, the audience was able to choose a protest sign and go outside the museum, where I read a speech about the anti-trans bills (speech co-written by Tine Adler). After the reading, we all marched together while chanting repeatedly “Let the waves of trans hate evaporate, not trans people”.
